Under supervision of the Detention Center Administrator, is responsible for inmates within the
Detention Center, the protection of life and property, and to perform routine tasks in accordance with North Dakota
law, rules and regulations established by the Attorney General of North Dakota and Burleigh County Detention
Center policies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Prepares investigation and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, also includes filing alphabetizing and labeling.
2. Gathers information in criminal and administrative investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, and suspects, and exercise independent judgment in determining the appropriate classification of inmates, assessing, and responding to the needs of special populations, and determining when probable cause exists to recommend disciplinary action.
3. Communicates effectively and coherently with officers and inmates, the general public, including minors, by giving information and directions, mediate disputes, and advising of rights and processes, using oral skills and existing communications systems; demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
4. Pursues fleeing inmates and perform rescue operations and other duties which may involve quickly entering and exiting secured areas; lifting, carrying and dragging objects; climbing up to and down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles; and using body force to gain entrance.
5. Performs searches of people, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, cell blocks, dormitories, and large areas that include the courthouse which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, and detaining people.
6. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and administer violations; detects presence of conditions such as smoke, unusual or excessive noise, odors, etc.
7. Transport and escort prisoners, detainees and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
8. Read and comprehend court documents, legal and non-legal, including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legal writs.
9. Process, book, and release inmates, to include taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of fingerprint impressions, documenting personal property, issuing detention center property, and any other necessary functions related to inmate care.
11. Read computer and camera screens; conduct video and audio surveillance while supervising inmates.
12. Inspect unclothed inmates with exposure to body fluids, wastes, and possible encounters with deceased persons. Male Detention Officers will search male persons and female Detention Officers will search female persons. In accordance with North Dakota Century Code, 12-44.1-13, (5) a female detention staff member shall be available at all times during which a female inmate is confined.
13. Performs other duties as required and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
AM I QUALIFIED?
You are qualified if you have:
- Current drivers license
- GED or High School Diploma
- Ability to work shift work (see "Shift Schedule" below)
You are not qualified if you have:
- Any felony level convictions
- Three or more misdemeanor convictions
- Any use of hard illegal drugs (meth, cocaine heroin, fentanyl, ecstasy, etc.)
- Registered sex offender.
- Pending criminal case.
SHIFT SCHEDULE:
This position is a shift work position. Every other weekend off, twelve-hour shifts with one-month rotations alternating between night shift and day shifts. Officers work a long week then a short week with this repeating. Long weeks are working Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Short weeks are just Wednesday and Thursday. Officers only work approximately 14 days per month.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must successfully complete standard background and a criminal record check along with physical and psychological exams. Costs associated with these exams will be paid for by the county.
- Applicant must have the abilities to perform the essential functions, with or without accommodation which may include but not limited to: lifting, extended walking, carrying and dragging objects, climbing up to and down from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles and using body force to gain entry.
- Skills to communicate, verbally and written, with some knowledge of appropriate legal terminology for the purpose of legal and non-legal documents
